Safety precaution to deal with denial

1.      Appoint a caring but assertive friend or relative as your ‘healing monitor’. Ask them to enquire about your progress at specified intervals such as once a week or once a month. Brief them about your favorite excuses and the rationalizations you may come up with (e.g. “I’ve just been too busy’, ‘I’ve not thought about it all this week so I must be getting better’).

2.      Make a list of the reasons why emotional healing is important to you. Write them out on a card and display them somewhere you will see them regularly.

3.      Set a date for starting the strategy now and let your monitor know! Then, reward yourself for having the courage to do both!
