What managers can do

Sleepy, fatigues workers are a problem for all managers. Given particular circumstances such as long hours of work, the time of day and the work environment and even the type of work, fatigue can become a problem. Tired workers make mistakes leading to a loss in production and also health and safety concern.

1.      Make sure the hours staff are required to work are fatigue safe.

2.      Screen all staff for sleep apnoea.

3.      Promote the use of water and less coffee/tea.

4.      Train staff and management in the use and abuse of power napping. Have a power-napping policy.

5.      Conduct a rank of order of causes of fatigue.

6.      Promote safe/alert driving – car pooling, taxis home, etc. After night shift.

7.      Provide regular fatigue management training sessions.

8.      Set up a ‘fatigue safe’ working party to address the causes and industry-specific solutions to managing fatigue.
