There are a number of things we can do to reduce pressure on ourselves. The first thing we can do is to add up all the current stresses that exist in our life at the present time, following the steps outline below.
1. Make a list of all of your various sources of stress and how persistent they have been.
2. Arrange your list under various headings, such as ‘trivial’ and ‘serious’, remembering that lots little irritations and niggles can be more upsetting than one single major difficulty.
3. Sort your list out again into the stresses that have immediate practical solutions, those that will get better in their own time, and those that you simple cannot change no matter what you do.
4. Try to stop worrying about the stresses that do not have an obvious practical solution.
5. Start working on the stresses you feel can be changed. It is worth trying possible solutions out and sees how you get on.
Tackling sources of stress may mean upsetting other people, but quite possibly you have been putting yourself out for others for far to long, and now it is time to put yourself first. As regards the other problems, why worry if they are beyond your control?
