Surviving the emergency stage

1.      The most crucial thinking to remember in this horrible stage is that it will end.

2.      Be kind to yourself.

3.      Nurture yourself by doing something you like, such as a hobby, or treating yourself to something such as a charity shop to buy some new clothes.

4.      The world can go on without you for a bit, so try to take ‘time out’.

5.      Retreat to your bed or whenever you feel safe. (You must have a safe place – this is top priority.)

6.      Cuddle your favorite toy.

7.      Remember that you might not be the best student on the course, the best friend to your mates, the best cook, parent, secretary or whatever, but almost certainly you are a ‘good enough’ student, friend, father etc.

8.      Dip in and out as your mood take you, remembering you can only do so much, then you must rest.

9.      Distract yourself in some way.
